Due to its role as the lingua franca of the modern world, English has an enormous impact on other languages. There is much research into this field being done at the moment. This, however, focuses either on lexis (simple and complex words) or syntactic structures. Phraseology is often ignored, as a perusal of dictionaries of Anglicisms demonstrates. The analysis of text corpora reveals that a large number of phraseological units (collocations and sentence-like units such as proverbs, formulae, winged words) are entering our contemporary languages. Investigations into German and Spanish, for example, have shown that phraseological loan translation from English is very productive and that sometimes the same units are spread, as the example at the end of the day shows (G am Ende des Tages; Sp al final del día). Phraseologists should pay attention to these developments and engage in cooperative studies on the topic. Our investigations might focus on the following questions:

  • What are the main vehicles for the spread of Anglicisms?
  • What are the main types of borrowing (direct borrowings, loan translations, semi-calques etc.)?
  • To what extent do structural similarities between languages influence the number and type of Anglicisms?
